Im Alter von 34 Jahre begann er seine Karriere bei General Motors, die erst im Jahr 1959 mit dem Eintritt in den Ruhestand endete. Im Jahr 1940, mit 47 Jahren wurde er zum Vize Prsidenten von General Motors berufen und blieb gleichzeitig der erste Designer im Konzern. In dieser Funktion schuf er im April 1949 die Studie namens Corsair, die im damals populren
